Monaco – what to visit

Hey hey! Monaco is one of these places we watch on the TV and dream about. This posh little country was in my bucket list for a while and finally I had the chance to visit it. While being in Nice it is a good idea to dedicate few hours to go to Monaco as it is only few kilometers far from the city. This post will help you decide what to visit while in Monaco.

There are two options using the public transportation – by bus or by train. Bus number 100 goes directly to Monaco Ville and gives you amazing sightseeing opportunity while traveling. You can take it from the beach area and it costs 1.50 euros. In our case the train was better option as we were staying right next to the train station. The ride is less than 20 minutes long and leaves you in Monte Carlo. The price of the ticket was around 4 euros. The rail lines are passing by the sea so you can enjoy the unique panorama along the way. From the train station in Monte Carlo we took line 2 bus to go to Monaco Ville.

Monaco Ville is located on a hill, there is the royal palace and the best panoramic views you can see!

If you stay long enough you can watch the change of the royal guards. The whole hill is surrounded by spectacular views and it is easy to spend hours admiring the beauty of this small country from above. In Monaco Ville is located the cathedral Saint Nicholas – impressive architecture!

Hidden in the narrow streets between the buildings you can find many small cafes and restaurants. Monaco is famous by being extremely expensive destination but to be honest in Monaco Ville the prices were relatively normal, a bit more expensive compared to Nice. We bought some souvenirs and headed to Monte Carlo – casino square here we come!

Arriving at Monte Carlo you can finally recognize all this celebrity glam you have heard about.

Expensive cars, luxury hotels, posh restaurants and many many tourists taking pictures. The casino building was open for visits, so in case you are interested you could also go inside, but it was extremely crowded and we didn’t go inside. Right there is located the most expensive hotel in Monte Carlo. Behind the casino there is a terrace with another panoramic view. There you can see a sculpture of a big hand  with the planet Earth on top of it. To the left are the stairs to go down to the seaside and reach some of the best beaches in Monaco.

The weather was extremely hot and it was not the best time for sightseeing. We were planning to go to the Exotic gardens but the 40-degrees heat made our tour quite exhausting. If you have the time and the weather allows it, you definitely should visit them, we have heard good recommendations about the place. As we were really thirsty we found a small ice-cream pavilion where we were able to buy water. The price of a small 0.5l bottle of water was 4 euros. Monte Carlo has its ways to show you why all the celebrities love it so much.

The harbor is full of luxury small or big yachts that make you day dreaming. The city is colorful – light pastel tones in white, beige or pink shades, Mediterranean flower bushes, seagulls flying around, the fragrance of a salty sea water and exotic palm trees… Paradise, isn’t it?

It was time to go back to our cute little apartment in Nice and to get ready for the night..

See you soon when Travelista goes to…
